Listen

Founding members Rob and Chuck began the Black Velvet Band in Maquoketa, Iowa in the early 1970’s. The band has grown to six members—together for over five years—whose talent, friendship and collaboration have taken the music to a new level. The band’s name is taken from the traditional Irish ballad (sorry folks, not the whiskey), and the album name is backcovertaken from a misspelling on a road sign near the old town of Hurstville. The unofficial band motto is, “As long as we’re having fun, that’s what counts” or “What counts is that we have fun” or “The fun that we can have is what can count”. . .or something like that.

Over the past couple of years we’ve worked to develop beyond our own sound and write some of our own songs. Hurtsville Rd. is a culmination of that work and the opening track, What is the Song?, is an expression of that quest.  We are happy to share our music with you.
